HELSINKI, Finland -- Slovakia defeated the United States 4-1 and the Czech Republic routed Norway 7-0 in group finales for both teams to reach the quarterfinals at the ice hockey world championship on Tuesday. The U.S. had a chance to clinch the group, but will finish second or third, meeting Russia or Finland in a quarterfinal on Thursday. In Stockholm, the other group leader, Switzerland, defeated Belarus 4-1 to achieve its best group record at the worlds, seven wins and no losses. The Swiss hope to win a medal for the first time since 1953, when they were third among three teams. Julian Walker scored twice, and Roman Josi and Mathias Bieber once each. Switzerland won its group, followed by Canada, Sweden and the Czechs. Slovakias Branko Radivojevic was handed a free score after only 15 seconds when U.S. goaltender Ben Bishop turned the puck over, trying to reach a teammate with a pass. Martin Bartek, 3:44 in, and Rene Vydareny made it 3-0 for last years runner-up with Rastislav Stana making only 20 saves. Danny Kristo replied for the U.S. in the second period, and Marko Dano added a late empty-net goal. "We were hopeful and excited about the opportunity to try to finish first. We were not able to do that but we will be ready for the next opponent," U.S. coach Joe Sacco said. "The first two goals were unfortunate, its tough to play catch-up. Slovakia made a good job of bottling up the middle of the ice and they protected the front of the net very well. We had a hard time getting there, and when we did their goalie came up big." The first goal was strange. Bishop went behind the net to pick up the puck and play it to a teammate. He hit the stick of Slovakia forward Tomas Kopecky and the puck went to Branko Radivojevic, who was left with an open net. "The first one bounced right out in the slot from behind the net. The second one I got to but it just squeaked through," Bishop said. "Just unlucky goals. Otherwise I think we played a good game, but the other goalie played well. We could have scored five easily. Its a shame we didnt win." For the Czechs, Tomas Fleischmann showed the way with goals in the second and eight minutes. In a game without great significance, Christian Ehrhoffs second goal was an overtime winner as Germany beat France 3-2. Both teams quarterfinal hopes were dashed by Slovakias earlier victory. Hugh McElhenny Jersey . The CFLs leading rusher kept adding to his gaudy numbers this season and scored the winning touchdown with just over two minutes to play. The New Westminster, B.C., native plowed three yards into the end zone for the last score of a heated, see-saw battle between the two teams with the best records in the CFL. Y. A. Tittle Jersey . New York did move up seven spots this year, after a 32-win campaign in 2015-16, Jacksons second full season as team president, but itll take a lot more Ws than that to make up for those ticket prices.Whats goodMadison Square Garden remains one of the Knicks few strong selling points, though fans still ranked the arena in the bottom half of all teams. The bright side: Stadium experience is the only category in which New York ranked inside the Top 100. Sure enough, the Knicks seem to find a way to fill the building, even when they struggle. Case in point: New York was one of seven NBA teams to report 100 percent attendance in 2015-16. Among those seven, they were the only club with a losing record.Whats badNot surprisingly, the Knicks fare poorly in bang for the buck (117th); very few wins and very high prices will do that. Knicks fans spent plenty of money oon the team last season: New Yorks average ticket is the most expensive in the league, at $130.ddddddddddddThats more than $25 more than the second-most expensive, $48 more than NBA average and an astonishing $99 more than the leagues cheapest average stub (Surprise! The Knicks are 118th in affordability, worst in the NBA). Considering that they won just 32 games and failed to reach the playoffs for the third straight season, the Knicks faithful didnt get a great return on their investment.Whats newIf theres one area where fans feel a slight amount of optimism, its on the sideline. New York jumped 16 spots to No. 100 in coaching, which measures strength of on-court leadership. Jackson replaced the jettisoned Derek Fisher and interim Kurt Rambis with former Suns coach Jeff Hornacek in the offseason. Although cautiously hopeful, fans werent overly impressed by the Knicks new faces, which include Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee. New York ranks 111th in players -- good for a 10-spot increase from last season but still pretty poor when you consider there are 122 franchises ranked.Next: Phoenix Suns?| Full rankings ' ' '
