The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed left-handed pitcher Edgar Osuna to a contract on Monday. Osuna, 25, was with the Goldeyes during training camp, but was released after suffering a shoulder injury. He has played six professional seasons since signing with the Atlanta Braves as an 18-year-old, but missed the entire 2012 season due to a shoulder injury. He was selected by the Kansas City Royals from the Braves in the 2009 MLB Rule 5 draft and subsequently went 6-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 17 starts at Double-A Northwest Arkansas of the Texas League. He also made five starts and appeared in nine games for Triple-A Omaha of the Pacific Coast League. Joining former Goldeyes Chris Roberson and Jon Weber with Mexicali this past winter, Osuna went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 starts. In 2011 with Northwest Arkansas, the product of Mazatlan, Mexico went 6-4 with a 7.89 ERA in 14 games, including 11 starts. Through 115 appearances, including 82 starts, in his career, Osuna, who is the first Mexican-born player to be signed by the Goldeyes in team history, averages 7.8 strikeouts for every nine innings and just two walks for every nine innings.
