BOSTON -- Boston College wants its offense to be rooted in its run game. The Eagles are hoping their efforts on the ground Saturday can be a step in re-establishing that identity.Quarterback Patrick Towles rushed for two touchdowns and added two more in the air as Boston College defeated Wagner 42-10.Jon Hilliman ran for two more touchdowns for the Eagles (2-2), who won their 25th straight game against a Football Championship Subdivision opponent.Wagner (2-1) wasnt rattled early, scoring on its second drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. But after the Seahawks pulled within 14-10 early in the second quarter, BC took control, and scored the final 28 points of the game.Boston College coach Steve Addazio expressed discontent this week with his teams inability to run the ball consistently over its first three games, after being among the Atlantic Coast Conferences best rushing teams his first three seasons in Boston.BC had just 44 yards rushing in last weeks 49-0 loss at Virginia Tech, its fewest since 28 at N.C. State in 2015. The Eagles entered Saturday ranked second from last in the ACC in rushing at just 124.4 yards per game. They had 188 yards rushing at halftime against Wagner, and finished with 300 yards on the ground for the day.We wanted to emphasize running the football today and we did that, Addazio said.Towles said the success on the ground helped relax the entire offense. That was big for us, he said. Weve traditionally been a good running football team here. It hasnt been to our standards the first few weeks of the season. I know thats one thing we really focused on this week.Towles day ended after three quarters. He was 9 of 16 for 157 yards passing and rushed seven times for 46 yards. Hilliman rushed 19 times for 83 yards, and Davon Jones also rushed 12 times for 90 yards. After giving up the early score, Boston Colleges defense tightened, holding to Seahawks to just 89 total yards in the first half, and minus 2 yards in the third quarter. The Eagles outgained Wagner 490-107 in total yards for the game.Wagner coach Jason Houghtaling said after some early stands, the Seahawks defense started to show fatigue as the game progressed. The longer they were on the field, the size of the offensive line, the physicality of the running backs, absolutely I think it wore down, he said.THE TAKEAWAYWAGNER: The Seahawks held their own early with a FBS opponent, which should give them a boost going into its conference schedule.BOSTON COLLEGE: The Eagles wanted to begin breathing life into what had been an anemic offense at times in their first three games. BC established the run early, and was able to get touchdowns in the red zone -- a positive with the meat of the ACC schedule still remaining. But penalties remain a concern. The Eagles had seven for 85 yards on Saturday, including a few that took away big plays.KEY NUMBERSBOSTON COLLEGE: Improved to 25-1 all-time against FCS schools. For the first time this season the Eagles did not turn the ball over and did not cause a turnover.WAGNER: Saturday marked just the second time in the Seahawks six games against Football Bowl Subdivision schools that they have reached double digits. The only previous time was in a 56-16 loss to Rice in 2015.RETURN GAMEBCs Tyler Rouse was active on both kickoff and punt returns Saturday, setting up a pair of Eagles touchdown runs with career-long kickoff and punt returns. With BC trailing 7-0, he set up the Eagles in Wagner territory with a 44-yard kickoff return. Hilliman scored from 1-yard out five plays later. Then, in the third quarter, he broke loose for a 53-yard punt return to set up a 6-yard Hilliman touchdown run.INJURY REPORTWAGNER: Linebacker Randall May suffered a left leg injury late in the fourth quarter, but was able to walk off on his own power.UP NEXTWAGNER: The Seahawks return home next week to host Sacred Heart in its Northeast Conference opener.BOSTON COLLEGE: The Eagles continue their four-game home stand next week with a visit from Mid-American Conference Buffalo.---AP college football website: collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Kyle Hightower on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/khightowerCheap Jordan 12 Real . - NASCAR announced a 33-race schedule for the 2014 Nationwide Series with virtually no changes from this years slate. Lets get two things out of the way right away before I try to build a case. One, the NHL has no intention of changing its current playoff structure.None, whatsoever, said commissioner Gary Bettman. Two, when it was suggested by an enterprising hockey writer that a play-in game might help stagnating league revenues, well, the commissioner disagreed. Not with the premise that a playoff game would help, but that revenues are stagnating. He even threw in a with all due respect to soften the blow. Its not stagnating, Bettman said. Its growing and will continue to grow.Got it. Everything is great. And when it comes to the playoffs, hes right. They are great. Stanley Cup playoff hockey is the best postseason in sports. Ill fight to the death on that one.Thats why its time for more.Parity is at an all-time high. As teammate Pierre LeBrun likes to say, the standings are like a crushed beer can. At the end of this season, were going to look at a team that finishes No. 9 in the conference and think that it would have had a really good chance at causing damage in the playoffs. As of Monday, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars are all outside a playoff spot. A good team is going to miss the postseason, a good team that could win a series or three if it makes it into the field. It makes the NHL absolutely primed for a play-in game.Let the No. 8 seed host the No. 9 seed in a game that allows the survivor to enter the big pool. Its not a novel idea.?Detroit Red Wings?GM Ken Holland pitched it in a recent interview with TSN. Lets not forget, this is the guy who gave us 3-on-3 overtime. So lets not just dismiss it.Its also been a part of baseball since 2012. The play-in game this year between the?San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets?on ESPN was the highest-rated wild-card game ever. It was the most streamed MLB event ever. It had an overnight rating of 5.8. The Stanley Cup finals averaged a 2.3. OK, that was low, but Im trying to make a point here. The drama would be irresistible. And it could be a way to get other networks involved annd invested in hockey.ddddddddddddImagine a one-game playoff between?Steven Stamkos Lightning and Alex Ovechkins Washington Capitals, two teams with Stanley Cup aspirations. The current standings suggest it wouldnt be out of the question. Or what about a one-game play-in game between Connor McDavids?Edmonton Oilers?versus Patrik Laines?Winnipeg Jets?People would watch. People would most definitely watch.Arizona Coyotes?co-owner Anthony LeBlanc certainly has noticed the success in baseball and it has him intrigued.I can just look at baseball from a fans perspective, it keeps people engaged in their team longer. Theres a chance they can get that final spot, LeBlanc said. Our league tends to have some competition coming in for those last couple spots the last couple of weeks, but not always. I kind of like it.OK, so we have an owner who sounds like he could be on board. What about the greatest player of all time? The more people, the more teams you can get in the playoffs, I think the bigger the recognition for our game gets, Wayne Gretzky told ESPN.com. I think its good.He did add that the league is usually smart about these things. So if they like it, great. If they dont, there might be a reason.Theyre always very reasonable about doing their homework and background checks on what is really good for the game, Gretzky said. If thats what they decide, great.Currently, 16 of 30 teams make the playoffs. Thats 53 percent of the league. Adding a play-in game in each conference along with Vegas would mean that 58 percent of the NHL could claim a playoff appearance.Maybe that cheapens the playoffs. Considering the excitement that would go into an annual play-in night, its worth the trade-off.At least thats the thought here.Commish?Random musings dont always turn into reality, Bettman said. You may think you can create a new reality, but the fact of the matter is we think the structure we have now works extraordinarily well. ' ' '
