There is not merely one way to build a winning team, so its important to maximize value. Given the nature of the sport, and the injuries that occur throughout the season, its important to build depth on your fantasy roster, so that you have a viable alternative at the ready when one of your starters is hurt or, at the very least, on a bye week. For years, running back has been the one position on which to focus and, while there has been some variance in recent seasons, it remains the safest way to build a team. 16 backs rushed for at least 1,000 yards last season (23 averaged at least 60 rushing yards per game), and 13 had at least eight rushing touchdowns, so getting two runners in the early rounds isnt a bad way to go. Of course, even that approach comes with the caveat that running backs get injured -- something about carrying the ball and being the target of 11 angry men -- but with most leagues employing at least a couple of starters at RB and then potentially a flex position or two, securing the services of running backs that are clearly number one on their teams depth chart is a safe play. The appeal of quality runners stands in contrast to a league that is becoming increasingly focused on passing. Scarcity means value, though, so while there are more productive options at quarterback and the receiver spots, the top running backs hold their value. Part of the reason that there isnt such urgency to go for a quarterback early is that a dozen quarterbacks threw for at least 3,900 yards last season and the quarterback ranked 13th in passing yardage, Cam Newton, also had more than 700 rushing yards. With a dozen quarterbacks throwing at least 25 touchdowns, that pretty much assures a productive starter for most leagues, especially considering that most leagues require only one starting quarterback. That doesnt mean settling for any quarterback, because Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are better bets than the 10th or 12th quarterbacks picked, but if you end up with Tony Romo, Andrew Luck or Eli Manning, there shouldnt be major regrets. As NFL teams throw the ball more frequently, there is a wider net to cast over wide receivers that could contribute to your fantasy squad. 32 wide receivers averaged at least 60 receiving yards per game last season, while 25 scored at least seven touchdowns. Again, theres obviously more appeal at the top end, where Calvin Johnson is a difference-maker and Brandon Marshall, Andre Johnson and Dez Bryant could all be top-tier producers, but there was value to be found from lesser-knowns like Cecil Shorts and T.Y. Hilton too and there will be young receivers that emerge this season as well. Get one or two proven guys and then secure depth at the position. Tight end is an interesting proposition, since Jimmy Graham is at the head of a thinning class. Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez are reliably productive too, but what about Rob Gronkowski? Under normal circumstances, he would challenge Graham for the top spot at the position, but after an offseason of surgeries, Gronkowski presents a risk. Then, there is a large group of similarly-productive options. Like the quarterback position, its better to get one of the best but, if that doesnt happen, youre not necessarily going to regret having the 10th-best tight end. Kickers and defences are late-round concerns. There is too much variability in their production to invest early selections, no matter how good you think the Niners defence is going to be or how many times you think Stephen Gostkowski will boot it through the uprights. The bottom line, though, is that a little preparation can make your team better come draft (or auction) day and TSNs Fantasy Football League Manager will be there every step of the way to help you enjoy the 2013 season. Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. http://www.wholesalejerseysnfl.com/ . STANFORD, Calif. -- Reid Travis scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half and Stanford made coach Jerod Haase a winner in his home debut with a 96-69 victory over Cal State Northridge on Tuesday night.Haase, who began his college playing career at Bay Area rival Cal, came to Stanford after four seasons as coach at Alabama-Birmingham. He replaced Johnny Dawkins, who got Stanford to the NCAA Tournament just once in eight seasons. It means everything to give him a win, Travis said, especially all the work weve put in, just building that relationship with him and the coaching staff.Haase called the experience awesome.Had a blast. The thing that continues to stand out in my mind is how much I enjoy coaching these guys, he said. Theyre so willing to learn and do what we ask of them.Travis missed the final 22 games of last season with a stress fracture in his leg but has come out of the blocks fast. He had career highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds in the Cardinals opening win over Harvard on Friday in Shanghai, China.Against CSUN, the 6-foot-8 junior made 6 of 9 shots from the field and converted 7 of 10 free throws, a big improvement from his 10-for-19 effort at the foul line vs. Harvard.Travis also showed the kind of hustle Haase was known for during his playing days at Cal and Kansas when he knocked over a half-dozen seats on the baseline while scrambling for a loose ball. Its definitely what he tries to instill to us, Travis said of the hustle. Toughness is one of our standards. When we get on the court, its full speed ahead.Marcus Sheffield added 17 points, Josh Sharma scored a career-high 15 and Dorian Pickens had 14 for Stanford (2-0).CSUN coach Reggie Theus said 20 turnovers were more than his team could overcome. We did a poor job of handling the double teams early in the game. That really got us ooff in the wrong direction, said Theus, adding that the Matadors defense was sporadic.dddddddddddd A lot of times when things are not going well offensively, your defense suffers. Thats the mark of a team still trying to become a good team.Kendall Smith, who grew up an hour away from the Stanford campus, scored 17 points to lead CSUN (1-2).BIG PICTURECSUN: On the heels of an encouraging performance in a 102-87 loss at No. 16 UCLA -- a game that featured 14 lead changes -- the Matadors gave the ball away 20 times and were outscored 28-5 off turnovers.Stanford: The Cardinal made the long trek back from Shanghai, where it opened its season with an 80-70 win over Harvard, and showed little travel hangover. The Cardinal led by as many as 18 points in the first half and was up 31 points with less than 8 minutes left in the game.STAT OF THE NIGHT: Stanford was last in the Pac-12 last season in both 3-point percentage (.320) and 3-pointers made (.172) and was a quiet 1-for-6 from the arc against Harvard in its opener. But the Cardinal made eight of its first 12 shots from 3-point range and finished 9-for-16 against CSUN. Six different players made at least one, led by Sheffield, who was 3 for 4.UP NEXTCSUN returns home to play Saturday against Northern Illinois, which puts its 2-0 record on the line Wednesday against Idaho before heading to California.Stanford continues its three-game, weeklong home stand Thursday against Weber State, which dropped to 1-1 after a 69-68 loss at Pepperdine on Tuesday.
