FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- It would be a serious mistake to pare down the list of Barclays contenders to only the two players in Sundays final pairing. Adam Scott is a proven winner and just 2 strokes back; right behind him, Martin Laird is coming on strong lately, and Emiliano Grillo is a ball striker extraordinaire; behind them, the list includes world No. 1 Jason Day among a group of impressive talents.Yet all eyes will be on that last twosome of Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed -- and for good reason.Theres the main plot, of course. The tournament title is at stake, an event celebrating its 50 years, being contested this week on one of the games most iconic public tracks, with plenty of perks on the line for the eventual champion. After a second consecutive bogey-free round, Fowler leads by a single stroke, thanks to some much-improved scrambling and putting numbers. Reed wasnt satisfied with his swing during a third-round even-par 71, but remains very much in the mix for his first victory of the season. The plot thickens, as they say. Then there are the subplots.Foremost among them is the Ryder Cup, with each player vying for one of the eight automatic bids handed out at the end of play Sunday. Heres what we know right now: Reed entered the week in the eighth and final roster spot; Fowler is four places further back in 12th.Theres an excellent chance that if either player fails to qualify for the United States team, captain Davis Love III would seriously consider him as one of his four wild-card selections. With other variables at play, Fowler likely needs a top-three result in order to remove any doubt to make the team, while Reed needs something in the top-10. Some of that is contingent on the play of Zach Johnson, who is in 62nd place at the Barclays entering the final round. He would be the last man squeezed off the roster if both Reed and Fowler finish inside the top eight in the Ryder point standings.Well, I think its pretty simple, Fowler said. Weve just got to take care of business tomorrow.Need another subplot? Try this: While many of the games biggest names eschewed golfs return to the recent Olympics for various reasons, both Fowler and Reed were among those who not only represented the U.S. in Rio de Janeiro but also embraced the festivities. While many observers expected the Olympians to collectively be a tired bunch entering this FedEx Cup stretch, perhaps theres a little karma at play -- even if they arent buying into the notion.I feel like Im playing well all year, said Reed. I dont really think it has anything to do with the Olympics or any other golf tournament. I just feel like Ive been playing some solid golf, and I just need to put one good round together [Sunday] and chase Rickie down.As if thats not enough, these two players know each other well, dating all the way back to their junior golf days.If Scott falters, if Laird and Grillo cant keep up, if Day and the rest of the guys in that pack dont make a move -- if all of those things happen and this turns into a two-man race, it makes for another fun subplot.Him and I, we spent a lot of time together growing up, Fowler explained. We played junior golf growing up, AJGA [American Junior Golf Association], traveling around the country, and college golf with each other. Yeah, weve been around each other for, whats that, 12, 13 years or so now. So it will be fun. Im looking forward to it. Hes fun to watch and hes going to be tough to beat tomorrow. They are two players who know each others tendencies and know each others games, facing each other on a big-time stage, with plenty at stake. Each desperately wants to win the tournament -- and they know winning will take care of everything else, especially a Ryder Cup berth. On Sunday, the plot thickens. So will the subplots. Nike Epic React Flyknit Clearance . Dukurs winning time was 1 minute, 45.76 seconds, a quarter-second better than Russias Alexander Tretiakov. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Keon Hatcher wasnt sure at first what to expect from an unplanned fifth season at Arkansas. However, whatever hesitation the wide receiver had about returning to the Razorbacks -- following a broken left foot that cost him most of last season -- has long since been put behind him.The 6-foot-2, 207-pound receiver has returned to his role as one of the top receiving targets for resurgent No. 17 Arkansas (3-0), a position he hopes to highlight on Saturday against No. 10 Texas A&M (3-0).Keon is definitely the glue that makes that group go, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said. Hes a pretty intelligent, gifted wide receiver that, if he continues to play well, will be rewarded for a long time.Hatcher began last season as the unquestioned top receiver for the Razorbacks, a role he affirmed by catching 13 passes for 198 yards in the first two games. It was in that second game against Toledo, though, that Hatcher felt the break in his foot -- forcing him to miss the rest of the season and reevaluate his immediate career plans.Like many of his former teammates, including current Buffalo Bills running back Jonathan Williams, Hatcher expected to try his shot at the NFL after last season. It was a path he decided to put off for a year while rehabilitating from his injury, one that also meant he would be without many of the teammates and friends he began college with.It was very tough at first, Hatcher said. The guys that Im so close with, Sebastian (Tretola), (Williams), those guys, they all left and I had to come back. It was very tough, but it was a blessing. While Hatcher lost many of his closest friends, he reeturned in a leadership position his coaches wanted him to take advantage of.ddddddddddddhe first way wide receivers coach Michael Smith made sure Hatcher did just that was by making sure he stayed around his teammates while recovering following surgery.Through that whole process, he was always around, Smith said. The thing I wouldnt let him do is not be around the football team. The guys still have a lot of faith in his words, so its been an easy transition -- if it even was a transition.Hatcher also had to adjust to life with a new starting quarterback -- Austin Allen -- for the first time in three seasons. After an offseason of working together, its an adjustment thats gone just fine so far for both -- with Hatcher second on the Razorbacks in catches (11) and first in receiving yards (204) after three games. That includes a career-best 73-yard catch in Arkansas 42-3 win over Texas State a week ago, a play that capped a three-catch, 96-yard receiving first quarter for the senior.Keons been huge for us this year, just the way he handles his business and teaches the younger guys how to act like a professional, really, Allen said. Hes been through it all, and the way hes playing this year is all about the work hes put in during the summer and its really showing.Last weeks performance is one Hatcher hopes repeat this week against a Texas A&M team thats beaten the Razorbacks in each of Hatchers first four seasons, including the last two in overtime. Its time to get over the hump, Hatcher said.
