MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Barry Odom didnt want to abandon the system that Gary Pinkel used at Missouri to produce two Southeastern Conference East Division titles in the past three seasons. So when Odom takes the field for the first time Saturday as the Tigers head coach at West Virginia, Pinkels influence will still be felt.It would be foolish to not stick with a lot of the things that coach has built a foundation here on, said Odom, who served on Pinkels staff for 10 years, including the 2015 season as defensive coordinator.Behind sophomore quarterback Drew Lock, Missouri is trying to rebound from a 5-7 season a year ago. Lock completed just 49 percent of his passes with eight interceptions in eight games.Missouri started with three straight wins. But starting quarterback Maty Mauk was suspended before the fifth game and eventually booted from the team.On-campus protests over the administrations handling of racial and student welfare issues led to Missouri players threatening to boycott a game in November, the same month Pinkel announced he would retire after the season to fight non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While Odom is making his debut, Dana Holgorsen starts his sixth season at West Virginia hoping it wont be his last.West Virginia reached eight wins a year ago for the first time since 2011, when the Mountaineers went 10-3 in Holgorsens first season. But he has gone 26-25 since, including 15-21 since joining the Big 12 in 2012.Hes entering the fifth year of a six-year contract and fans want production now.Holgorsen hasnt publicly discussed his job security. He said what keeps him up at night is preparing for this years opening opponent based on watching film from last season.Theres only so much time in the day that you can have to be able to figure out what they do, Holgorsen said.It marks the first time since 1996 that Missouri starts the season on the road.---Some other things to know in the sixth- meeting between Missouri and West Virginia:TRANSFER ROSS: Alex Ross joins Missouri this season as a graduate transfer from Oklahoma and returns to Morgantown where he gave the Mountaineers fits in 2014, scoring on a 100-yard kickoff return for the Sooners. Missouri ranked dead last in the Bowl Subdivision in kickoff returns a year ago at 15.1 yards per attempt. Ross also shores up a backfield that was last in the SEC at 115 rushing yards per game.NEW COORDINATORS: Josh Heupel takes over as Missouris offensive coordinator. Heupel spent last season at Utah State and helped mentor Heisman Trophy winners Jason White and Sam Bradford at Oklahoma. Joe Wickline is now handling the offense for West Virginia after having the same job at Texas.WEST VIRGINIA D: The Mountaineers have nine new starters on defense. But Holgorsen points out the unit has plenty of playing experience. All 11 starters are juniors or seniors.KICKER SIDELINED: West Virginia placekicker Josh Lambert, a Lou Groza Award finalist in 2014, sat out spring practice and is serving a three-game suspension for an undisclosed violation of Big 12 eligibility rules. He tied for the Big 12 lead a year ago with 17 field goals. Mike Molina, who handled kickoffs in three games last year, will temporarily fill in.ODOM THE PLAYER: Odom started at inside linebacker for the Tigers when they beat West Virginia in the 1998 Insight.com Bowl. Thats the last time the teams met. He graduated in 1999 and is seventh in school history in career tackles with 362.---AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.orgLee Smith Jersey . If only his tiebreaking homer wouldve sealed the win as tight. No such luck. Not here at Coors Field, where big leads can shrink oh so rapidly. Pacheco gave the team a seemingly safe cushion in the fifth, Carlos Gonzalez later added an insurance homer and the Colorado Rockies weathered a late rally by the San Francisco Giants for a 10-9 win on Friday night. With that, the Rockies snapped a 10-game skid against the Giants. Sure, it was just one win, but it was a big one for the Rockies psyche. "Its obvious weve had some rough history against the Giants," manager Walt Weiss said. "Its just nice to be able to fight back and, in the end, put a game away." It would be far from easy. The Giants, who rallied from an early six-run deficit the night before, were on the comeback trail again Friday. Down five, they made things interesting by scoring three times in the seventh. It couldve been more, but Dexter Fowler made a diving catch in centre to end the inning. "Game changer," Weiss said. After Buster Posey made it a 10-9 game in the eighth with a two-out homer off Matt Belisle, Hunter Pence followed with a double. But Belisle got Brett Pill to ground out and strand Pence. In the ninth, Rafael Betancourt struck out the side for his 10th save in as many chances. "Thats a tough-guy save right there, because the game was pretty crazy," Weiss said. Pacheco laced his first homer of the season to left on a hanging slider from Madison Bumgarner (4-2), who failed to protect an early four-run lead. "Felt good," Pacheco said with a modest shrug. Fowler had a feeling it might be a big night for Pacheco, who was filling in for Todd Helton at first base. They took early batting practice together and the ball was flying off Pachecos bat. "I saw the thump he had," Fowler said. "So that (homer) didnt surprise me." Jorge De La Rosa (5-3) entered the game without giving up a run at Coors Field in 12 innings. He was hit hard, surrendering five runs in five innings, only to settle down enough to earn the win. Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Wilin Rosario -- the heart of the Rockies batting order -- finished with a combined six hits, four RBIs and five runs scored. Gonzalez added an insurance run with his homer in the sixth. "Huge win," Gonzalez said. ";This team is tough to beat.dddddddddddd" Pablo Sandoval had three hits and drove in two runs for San Francisco, while Marco Scutaro extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Bumgarner turned in his first clunker against the Rockies in quite a while. He had won six of his last seven starts before struggling on Friday. The lefty allowed a season-high nine runs -- seven earned -- in just 4 2-3 innings. His ERA climbed nearly a full run to 3.09. Trying to preserve a one-run lead in the fifth, Bumgarner gave up a game-tying single to Rosario. A walk to D.J. LeMahieu loaded the bases for Pacheco, who sent the first pitch from Bumgarner over the fence. "That grand slam wasnt too fun," Bumgarner said. "I just wasnt making pitches when I needed to (in order) to get guys." Pacheco also had an RBI on a grounder in the second. "Just glad I was able to come through for our team," he said. The Giants had a frightful night in the field, committing a season-high four errors. Two of those miscues came in the third, when Sandoval had a throwing error to begin the inning and centre fielder Angel Pagan later sent a high throw to third base that ended up in the Giants dugout, allowing Dexter Fowler to trot home. Tulowitzki tied the game at 4 with an RBI single. "Too many errors, particularly in this ballpark," manager Bruce Bochy said. "They fought back, Ill say that. But were making way too many errors. "Weve got to tighten things up." The Giants have made themselves quite comfortable at Coors Field, winning 14 of their last 20 in this hitters park. Weiss quickly dismissed the notion the Giants have a psychological edge on his team. Although, this does help. "We know weve got to beat these guys," Weiss said. "We know theyve had our number over the last couple of years. Theyre the world champions, so you have to go through them eventually. We know all that stuff. Its not stuff we have to talk about, its already there. Got to go out and play well, find ways to win games." NOTES: Giants RHP Tim Lincecum (3-2) will start Saturday night. ...
