COLUMBIA, Mo. -- What was supposed to be a four-hour bus ride for Eastern Illinois coach Jay Spoonhour and his team turned into a 12-hour interstate fiasco as a winter storm made I-70 a standstill for many weekend travelers. An impromptu taco run and a monumental road victory made the journey more than worthwhile, as the Panthers defeated Missouri 67-64 Saturday.Montell Goodwin scored 22 points, including 15 in the second half, to help Eastern Illinois beat Missouri for the first time in four attempts. Its a really big win for us, Spoonhour said. There was a long stretch in there where I didnt know if guys thought they could win the game. We were kind of looking around for somebody else to do it, and eventually, we made a few shots, and that was kind of it.Spoonhour described being stuck on the interstate for nearly seven hours with thousands of other travelers and a bus full of athletes, which happened to be yards away from a Mexican restaurant.About three hours in, the guys said `hey coach, man, can we get some tacos? Spoonhour recalled. Were on the interstate, and I said no, its illegal.... I thought it was really wise to not do that. About six and half hours into the trip, I said, hey who wants to go get 50 tacos?Demetrius McReynolds added 16 points and six rebounds, and Ray Crossland added eight points and six rebounds. McReynolds scored 10 of his points in the first half after starting 3-for-4 from the field, but from there made only 2 of 13 attempts. The Panthers (7-4) took a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes before the Tigers mustered an 18-4 run, giving them a 10-point lead, the largest lead of the game. Despite shooting 26.5 percent in the first half, including 1-for-15 from 3-point range, Eastern Illinois battled back and cut Missouris lead to only two by halftime, 32-30.In the second half, Eastern Illinois caught fire, led by Goodwin, who shot 6-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.I thought they outplayed us, Missouri coach Kim Anderson said. Especially in the second half, I thought we really, really struggled to keep them off the boards. Youve got to give them credit. Im not sure why we didnt have the energy that we needed to play this game, but were certainly going to try to find it by Wednesday.Every time Missouri attempted a run, Eastern Illinois would answer with an even bigger play. With 3:14 remaining, Frankie Hughes gave Missouri a 63-61 lead with a fast-break dunk, but the Panthers immediately answered with a 3-pointer from McReynolds. The next shot to fall was a 3-pointer from Goodwin with 1:39 remaining. Hughes finished with five points on 2-for-6 shooting. The Tigers (5-5) did not make a field goal for the final 3:31, while the Panthers closed the game on a 6-1 run. Terrence Phillips was fouled with under a minute left, but made only 1 of 2 free-throw attempts. Phillips finished with eight points, seven assists and three rebounds.K.J. Walton and Willie Jackson each scored nine points for the Tigers, and Kevin Puryear added eight points and six rebounds.BARNETTS BACKSt. Louis native Jordan Barnett made his Missouri debut, having sat out for the last year after transferring from Texas. He finished with three points and five rebounds, including a two-handed breakaway dunk to give the Tigers a 55-54 lead with 7:31 remaining. His last collegiate game was Dec. 8, 2015 against University of Texas-San Antonio. He had 12 points and five rebounds in that game.COMMON CONNECTIONSSpoonhour was an assistant coach at Missouri from 2004-06. His legs werent quite fast enough to keep their last-ditch rally going.J.D. Martinez threw Bruce out at the plate on the final play of the game, enabling the Detroit Tigers to hold on for a pulsating 6-5 victory over the Mets on Saturday night. Bruce was trying to score from second on Travis dArnauds single to right field.Bruce and Curtis Granderson homered for the Mets, but New York went 2 of 12 with men in scoring position -- and one of the hits was dArnauds on the last play of the game. Its really tough to lose this one, because we had so many good at-bats in the last few innings, and we just couldnt get the one big hit, Mets manager Terry Collins said. Then, when we finally get one, J.D. Martinez makes a great throw and we dont get anything out of it.New York trailed 6-1 before rallying with two runs each in the fifth and seventh, and with men on first and second and two out in the ninth, dArnaud hit a single to right. Martinez charged the ball, and his one-hop throw home was in time to get Bruce.I wasnt even looking at the throw, Bruce said. I just wanted to get to the plate as fast as I could and get in there.Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs for the Tigers, who have won 10 of 11 and trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by two games.Detroits Matt Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, and New Yorks Logan Verrett (3-7) yielded six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.Martinezs throw gave Francisco Rodriguez his 32nd save in 34 chances.J.D. picked me up big time, Rodriguez said. I guess when everythings going well, you catch those types of breaks. After Bruces fourth-inning homer tied the game at 1, the Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run single, and Ian Kinsler drove in another run with a single. Cabreras two-run single gave Detroit a five-run lead.It was 6-3 in the seventh when Bruce came up with men on first annd second and nobody out.ddddddddddddCabrera fielded his grounder and threw toward second, but the ball hit runner Neil Walker in the head and bounced toward center field. A run came home, and the Mets scored another when Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to third that Mike Aviles misplayed for an error. With men on first and second and still nobody out, dArnaud grounded into a double play, and Detroit was able to get out of the inning up 6-5.The Mets also hit into double plays in the sixth and the eighth.CONCESSIONThe Mets had nothing to lose by challenging the final play at the plate, but they were satisfied that Bruce was indeed out and didnt ask for a review. Our guys said he was out on the replay, so we didnt bother, Collins said. Maybe thats a play that you challenge no matter what, because the worst that can happen is you still lose the game.ROSTER MOVESThe Tigers could celebrate the win, but they announced afterward that RHP Jordan Zimmermann and 3B Nick Castellanos were headed to the DL. Castellanos left Saturdays game with a non-displaced fracture of his left hand. He was hit by a pitch during Detroits big fourth inning.Probably a minimum of four weeks, manager Brad Ausmus said. Certainly not good news for us. The important thing is for him to get healthy. Were looking really some point in early September that wed get him back. The Tigers will call up INF Casey McGehee and LHP Kyle Ryan. LHP Daniel Norris will eventually take Zimmermanns spot in the rotation.TRAINERS ROOMMets: RHP Zack Wheeler (Tommy John surgery) pitched an inning in his first rehab start with Class A St. Lucie.UP NEXTMets: RHP Jacob deGrom (7-5) takes the mound Sunday as New York tries to avoid a three-game sweep.Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (6-11) starts for Detroit in the finale of this nine-game homestand.---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtrister ' ' '
