ST. LOUIS -- Robby Fabbri was slow to rediscover his scoring touch early in his second NHL season. He finally got his first goal of 2016-17 in the first period Sunday night, and the St. Louis Blues followed with a long-awaited offensive barrage.Fabbri and Jori Lehtera each scored in the first 3:35 and the Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-1.It felt like my first goal last year, said Fabbri, who had 18 goals as a rookie. Its nice to get that weight off my shoulders.St. Louis entered with 26 goals in 12 games this season and hadnt scored more than two goals in any of its past six games. We knew goals were going to come, Blues goalie Jake Allen said. Tonight, the tides turned a little bit and thats nice.Allen stopped 22 shots for St. Louis, and the Blues killed off five power plays. The Blues have won 10 of their last 12 games against Colorado dating to April 2011.Matt Duchene got his sixth goal for Colorado. Semyon Varlamov had stopped 20 of 25 shots, and Calvin Pickard had three saves in the third period for the Avs.Fabbri scored 1:37 into the first on a 2-on-1 break with Dmitrij Jaskin, beating Varlamov to the short side.Lehtera scored from the slot off a pass from Carl Gunnarsson, getting his first goal 3:35 in.The first period today was the best period we played all year, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. Our puck pursuit, our tenacity, our secondary forecheck was excellent. We looked like a team right on the mark.Man, we did a lot of things right. You draw up the game plan and thats exactly what you want. I was really happy with how we played in the first period. After Duchene made it 2-1 by tipping Francois Beauchemins shot 6:38 into the second, Jaden Schwartz deflected a slap shot by Alexander Steen with 5:06 left in the period and Scottie Upshall buried a back-handed pass from Ryan Reaves about two minutes later. It was a great pass, Upshall said. Our fourth line has been working hard lately and getting some chances. It was nice to chip in.David Perron scored with 54 seconds left in the second on a shot that deflected off Varlamovs glove and shoulder.Varlamov was not happy with his performance. You saw what happened. I gave up five goals, Varlamov said. It is my fault. Ill take it.The Avalanche have totaled three goals in their last four games.Weve got to look at each other and look at ourselves in the mirror, Beauchemin said. We can all do more. Its not one, two, three, four guys. Its everybody thats got to step up their game.Game notesBlues D Joe Edmundson did not return after getting hit by Rene Bourque along the boards late in the first period with an upper body injury. The programs displaced for more than a year have moved back in, Reynolds hosts its first sports event Friday and the school has scheduled a re-opening ceremony next week.Athletic director Debbie Yow said all thats left are small details such as touch-up paint.I think we moved in maybe two weeks later than the original plan, Yow said. Thats a small price to pay.Work began on Reynolds in March 2015, displacing sports such as womens basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling to play at temporary venues through the 2015-16 sports season.Reynolds opened in 1949 near the heart of the Raleigh campus. It was best known as the half-century home to the mens basketball program -- spanning the careers of program greats such as David Thompson and late coach Jim Valvano -- before the program moved off campus in 1999.The project included ripping out about 2,800 seats and shifting the arena bowl to one end of the building. That made room for a sports walk of fame, which weaves around Reynolds from a grand hall and through the concourses.Theres also a video control room to produce broadcasts of Wolfpack sporting events for the newly created Atlantic Coast Conference digital channel and eventually the ACC Network when the TV channel launches iin 2019.ddddddddddddStill, the arena bowl has a familiar look, though with a down-sized capacity of around 5,500.The entrance hall features display cases honoring coaches such as late Hall of Fame womens basketball coach Kay Yow and athletes who went on to compete professionally or in the Olympics. Interactive touchscreens allow visitors to navigate through the Wolfpacks sports history, including a large multi-panel wall featuring trivia questions, photos and digital wolves who occasionally howl before running off screen. The school also mounted the buildings old noise meter -- a tower of light bulbs that lit up one-by-one -- above the hall. Visitors can operate it with a sliding switch that sends audio from an old radio game broadcast echoing through the hall. The volleyball team plays here Friday against Delaware. The official re-opening is set for Sept. 16 with the latest inductions to the walk of fame. Its been four years of planning and 16 months of construction, said Michael Lipitz, a deputy athletics director who served as chairman of the project committee. It was good to move the teams back in last week and see the student-athletes out on the court practicing. Were ready for prime time and ready for people to experience everything thats here now.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap and the APs college basketball site at http://collegebasketball.ap.org ' ' '
