PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Rex Ryans new-look defense is running out of rookie starters. The Bills two top draft picks are now sidelined with injuries. The team announced Wednesday that linebacker Reggie Ragland will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee. Ryan said he expects Ragland to miss the entire season.Ragland was Buffalos second-round pick out of Alabama. The Bills are already down their first-round pick, linebacker Shaq Lawson, who is expected to miss at least the first month of the season recovering from shoulder surgery in May.Well, we were excited about those two guys. Obviously, we think theyre rare talents and thats not going to change either based on an injury, Ryan said following practice. Its just unfortunate that weve got to be a little more patient than maybe we wanted to.Ragland was hurt during practice Friday. He was going after a ball carrier on a run play when he pulled up suddenly and went to the ground without being hit.Initial tests were inconclusive because of swelling around the knee. The severity of the injury was revealed after a follow-up test. The Bills thought so highly of Ragland that they considered selecting him with their first pick, 19th overall. They instead chose Lawson, a highly touted pass rusher out Clemson whose stock dropped because of concerns he might need shoulder surgery to repair an injury that nagged him in college. In the second round, the Bills traded up eight spots to select Ragland with the 41st pick. Both were immediately pegged as starters on a defense being overhauled after it underperformed during Ryans first season last year.Ragland spent the entire offseason playing one of two middle linebacker spots, alongside returning starter Preston Brown.Veteran free agent addition Zach Brown will replace Ragland. The Bills also restocked the position by signing veteran free agents Brandon Spikes and David Hawthorne on Sunday.Lawson was supposed to immediately step in to fill the outside position left open after the Bills cut Mario Williams in March. Lawsons backup, veteran Manny Lawson, is also hurt. Hes expected to miss most of the preseason with a partially torn pectoral muscle.Despite the injuries, Ryan is sticking with the offseason vow he made in saying Buffalos defense will be better from last year, when it ranked 20th in yards allowed and managed 21 sacks -- a franchise-low for a 16-game season.Ive said all along our defense will be much improved, and Ill stand by that, Ryan said. Its really unfortunate for the young man and for our team because we know hes a fine player. But guys will step up.Game notesWR Greg Salas left practice with a hamstring injury. ... Hodgson has been the most accomplished No.9 this season and is so dangerous in attack around the ruck.Wallace made a surprise move from the halves to hooker earlier this year, but the shift by Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has proved to be a masterstroke.Wallace combines perfectly with Matt Moylan, Nathan Cleary and Bryce Cartwright in the Panthers unorthodox offensive structure. How fit Hodgson is remains to be seen after he battled an ankle injury in the lead-up.But when he drifts across field anything can happen.Matt Moylan v Jack Wighton.Moylan was superb in the Panthers comprehensive elimination final win over Canterbury last weekend and he is the fulcrum of the Panther attack. However he can be a little suspect under the high ball.Wighton plays it as tough as anyone and is fantastic in defence and running the ball out of his own end, even if he does not have hands as silky as Moylans. The wet conditions expected in Canberra might prrove more to Wightons liking and less open to Moylans expansive style.ddddddddddddIosia Soliola v Trent MerrinAfter returning from Super League, Soliola has been at the heart of everything for Canberra this year.Merrins move to the Panthers has been no less of a successful. The former NSW back-rower had arguably his best game for the Panthers in the win over Canterbury last week, while the Raiders struggled as the game went on against the Sharks.Keeping up their early intensity throughout the game will be crucial for the Raiders and Soliola is key here.Bryce Cartwright v Joey LeiluaNo doubt coach Ricky Stuart will aim Raiders wrecking ball at Cartwright on the visitors right edge.Leilua was down on involvement last week in the loss to Cronulla and that spells bad news for the Panthers.Cartwrights defence has been suspect at times this year and if he tries to grab at Leiluas jumper too often he will find nothing but thin air.
