PHOENIX -- Maybe the Arizona Diamondbacks hoped for more from Robbie Ray on the heels of his being named the National League Player of the Week for last weeks two winning performances. Not that Ray disappointed on Thursday night, but he couldnt ride the recent success to another win as the Diamondbacks were limited by Atlanta Braves youngster Matt Wisler in a 3-1 loss.Wisler, called up from Triple-A in time to start Thursday, didnt allow a hit for six innings. The 23-year-old Wisler (5-11) ended up allowing a run and two hits with four strikeouts and three walks in eight innings. He stayed with his sinker, maybe took a little bit off it like a (batting practice) fastball. You saw all of those ground balls that resulted from it when he was behind in the count, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. Tip your cap, guys battled him but he just beat us.Paul Goldschmidt broke up Wislers no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Goldschmidt scored on Chris Owings groundout. My whole focus was to just compete on every pitch, Wisler said. Slider got better as the game went along.Ray (7-12) saw his pitch count surpass 100 before the fifth inning was over. He allowed two runs and six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. It was a little reminiscent of some of his outings last year, where he would only give up a couple of runs but it took a lot of pitches to do it, Hale said of Ray.The Braves scored twice in the third when the first three hitters singled. Freddie Freeman drove in Ender Inciarte, then Nick Markakis beat out a ground ball to avoid a double play that allowed Adonis Garcia to score from third base.I felt good coming out. Just there in the middle innings, command got away from me a little bit, but I was able to battle and was able to hold them to just two runs, so I am pretty happy with that, Ray said.Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson, once a top Diamondbacks prospect, took two hits away with good defensive plays. He went deep in the hole to flag down a sharply hit grounder from Owings and threw him out at first base in the second inning. Then in the third, Swanson reached to catch Tuffy Gosewichs line drive up the middle.Swanson reached on an error to lead off the sixth and scored on Gordon Beckhams double off Arizona reliever Silvino Brach. We knew he was going to be a great player. We drafted him No. 1, Hale said of Swanson. He is a quality kid, he is a quality player. He has a nice future in the major leagues.FREE(MAN) FALLINGFreeman, playing first base, tumbled head first over a railing down the right field line trying to run down a foul pop in the second inning. Freeman somersaulted over the railing and his lower back slammed into a row of chairs beneath the padded fence. Teammates and staff rushed to his aid, but Freeman was able to get to his feet and remained in the game. When I watched the replay I was like, `Were lucky because he didnt snap his back, Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. Talking to him before his last at-bat, he said `Now it just feels like I got hit with a pitch.ROSTER MOVESThe Diamondbacks called up Bracho and pitcher Vicente Campos before Thursdays game, Bracho from Triple-A Reno and Campos for his major league debut from Double-A Mobile. Relievers Dominic Leone and Steve Hathaway were optioned to Reno.Campos was one of the players acquired from the Yankees for reliever Tyler Clippard on July 31. Brach has pitched in 15 games for Arizona this season. He warmed up to enter the game in the seventh inning but was not called upon. The Braves optioned pitcher Madison Younginer to Triple-A Gwinnett. LOUIS -- The moment that many St. Louis Cardinals fans clamored for since Alex Reyes callup from Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 9 will arrive Saturday night. With veteran right-hander Mike Leake coming down with shingles, Reyes will step in and make his first major league start at Busch Stadium against the Oakland Athletics.Regarded by many as the top pitching prospect in the minors before his promotion, Reyes has justified the hype in his first five big league appearances. In 9 1/3 innings, Reyes has allowed no runs and just five hits and four walks, striking out 13 with a fastball clocked as high as 101 mph.He also picked up a win in his second outing against the Chicago Cubs as well as a save against Philadelphia, giving a boost to a bullpen that struggled over most of the previous two months.Hes a top of the rotation talent, Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said of Reyes after he worked a 1-2-3 ninth in his major league debut on Aug. 9. It looks like they have another good one.The contrast between Saturday nights starters couldnt be more glaring. While Reyes relies on strikeouts, Oakland right-hander Zach Neal is your classic pitch to contact guy.Of all major leaguers who have pitched at least 25 innings, Neal (2-3, 5.49 ERA) has the lowest walks-per-nine innings and strikeouts-per-nine innings, issuing just two walks and fanning only 14 in 39 innings.Neals issue has been keeping the ball from leaving the ballpark. He has yielded 47 hits, including seven homers, in 39 1/3 innings. It will be his fiftth big league start after 10 relief appearances.ddddddddddddAt 55-73, the As season has essentially been reduced to contractual obligation and finding opportunities for youngsters in order to get an early start on 2017. One of those fresh-faced lads, third baseman Ryon Healy, is stamping himself as a keeper.A fourth-inning single Friday night enabled Healy to stretch his hitting streak to 12 games, during which he has batted .400 (18-for-45). In his first 38 MLB games, Healy is hitting .281 with six homers and 17 RBI.Hes seeing every type of pitcher and hes making the adjustments, Oakland manager Bob Melvin said of Healy. Hes not scared at all. Hes very respectful of his teammates and the game, but hes very tenacious.St. Louis won Friday nights series opener 3-1, playing one of its cleanest games of the year a night after a sloppy 10-6 loss to the New York Mets. The Cardinals didnt commit an error and even manufactured an insurance run with smart baserunning, a feature they havent often employed this year.In upping its record to 68-59, St. Louis looked more like a playoff team -- it leads Miami by 1 1/2 games for the National Leagues second wild-card spot -- and less like a team simply trying to outslug everyone. It was a good, clean win, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. It was good baseball all the way around. Just a good, solid game, the kind of game we like to see. ' ' '
