CINCINNATI -- Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw missed his teammates so much that he flew from Los Angeles to Cincinnati just to work out with them. The injured left-hander threw on flat ground Friday before their game against the Reds, the last step before he throws off a mound in the bullpen for the first time in more than a month.I feel good so far, said Kershaw, who has been sidelined since June 26 with a herniated disk. Its a one-step-at-a-time thing. I throw a bullpen [session] tomorrow. Thats another step. Ive been throwing for the last week and a half, and I havent had any problems.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was as happy to see Kershaw as Kershaw was to be with the team.Hes in good spirits, Roberts said. This time, Ive done everything I need to do. We gave it a shot the first time, and we were pretty aggressive. There were no signs that it would backfire, but it did. This time, weve been more conservative.Roberts expects Kershaw to throw 20 to 25 pitches Saturday and, if all goes well, 40 in another bullpen session Tuesday in Los Angeles.Kershaw was asked why he decided to rejoin his teammates in Cincinnati.Skyline Chili, he said, smiling, mentioning a local delicacy. Its fun to be on the road with the guys. Its no fun watching on TV. I like being on the road.Roberts also said left-hander Rich Hill, who has been on the disabled list since July 18 with a left middle finger blister, likely will be activated next week and make his Dodgers debut after being acquired in an Aug. 1 trade with the Oakland Athletics.Hill threw 75 pitches in a simulated game Thursday at the Dodgers spring training facility before joining the team Friday in Cincinnati. It doesnt matter what sport youre talking about, Proudfoot said.I dont think we were surprised. We know how tough they were in June, particularly around their defensive alignment, their defensive breakdown and how they tend to smother you.We knew how difficult it was to crack them. By hook or crook we got away with it in June -- being at home, being at altitude maybe gave us a bit of an advantage but we knew how tough they were.So were not surprised. I listened to the comments of [All Blacks head coach] Steve Hansen afterwards and I echo them. He was complimentary of what Ireland are doing, and thats what you get when you get that alignment. If youve got 23 players who are all seeing the same picture on the field and executing that, thats when you get a great result. And thats what the Irish did.So theyve been setting up for that victory for a long time and planning for it and processing for it. And theyre a damn good side. ' ' '
