FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- It would be a serious mistake to pare down the list of Barclays contenders to only the two players in Sundays final pairing. Adam Scott is a proven winner and just 2 strokes back; right behind him, Martin Laird is coming on strong lately, and Emiliano Grillo is a ball striker extraordinaire; behind them, the list includes world No. 1 Jason Day among a group of impressive talents.Yet all eyes will be on that last twosome of Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed -- and for good reason.Theres the main plot, of course. The tournament title is at stake, an event celebrating its 50 years, being contested this week on one of the games most iconic public tracks, with plenty of perks on the line for the eventual champion. After a second consecutive bogey-free round, Fowler leads by a single stroke, thanks to some much-improved scrambling and putting numbers. Reed wasnt satisfied with his swing during a third-round even-par 71, but remains very much in the mix for his first victory of the season. The plot thickens, as they say. Then there are the subplots.Foremost among them is the Ryder Cup, with each player vying for one of the eight automatic bids handed out at the end of play Sunday. Heres what we know right now: Reed entered the week in the eighth and final roster spot; Fowler is four places further back in 12th.Theres an excellent chance that if either player fails to qualify for the United States team, captain Davis Love III would seriously consider him as one of his four wild-card selections. With other variables at play, Fowler likely needs a top-three result in order to remove any doubt to make the team, while Reed needs something in the top-10. Some of that is contingent on the play of Zach Johnson, who is in 62nd place at the Barclays entering the final round. He would be the last man squeezed off the roster if both Reed and Fowler finish inside the top eight in the Ryder point standings.Well, I think its pretty simple, Fowler said. Weve just got to take care of business tomorrow.Need another subplot? Try this: While many of the games biggest names eschewed golfs return to the recent Olympics for various reasons, both Fowler and Reed were among those who not only represented the U.S. in Rio de Janeiro but also embraced the festivities. While many observers expected the Olympians to collectively be a tired bunch entering this FedEx Cup stretch, perhaps theres a little karma at play -- even if they arent buying into the notion.I feel like Im playing well all year, said Reed. I dont really think it has anything to do with the Olympics or any other golf tournament. I just feel like Ive been playing some solid golf, and I just need to put one good round together [Sunday] and chase Rickie down.As if thats not enough, these two players know each other well, dating all the way back to their junior golf days.If Scott falters, if Laird and Grillo cant keep up, if Day and the rest of the guys in that pack dont make a move -- if all of those things happen and this turns into a two-man race, it makes for another fun subplot.Him and I, we spent a lot of time together growing up, Fowler explained. We played junior golf growing up, AJGA [American Junior Golf Association], traveling around the country, and college golf with each other. Yeah, weve been around each other for, whats that, 12, 13 years or so now. So it will be fun. Im looking forward to it. Hes fun to watch and hes going to be tough to beat tomorrow. They are two players who know each others tendencies and know each others games, facing each other on a big-time stage, with plenty at stake. Each desperately wants to win the tournament -- and they know winning will take care of everything else, especially a Ryder Cup berth. On Sunday, the plot thickens. He finally came up with a gem against the Reds, and he even won at home for the first time in 16 consecutive starts with the Twins and Angels.Obviously, I would have liked to win earlier, but I like where Im at, as far as where Im throwing the ball, Nolasco said. I feel good. Im eating up innings, and Im just trying to give my team a chance to win games.THROWING BLANKSDespite their dismal overall record, the Angels matched Cleveland for the major league lead with their 10th shutout of the season.
