ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins have no plans to change their offence despite Robert Griffin IIIs surgically repaired right knee that kept the quarterback out all spring and might keep him sidelined through the start of training camp on July 25. "The zone read is something I feel in the long run helps a quarterback," offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday after the Redskins final practice before training camp. "Everyones accounted for and there arent many free hitters. The whole key to the zone read is just the threat of the zone read. If youre not honouring it, youre usually going to get 15 yards before contact. "It was the least pass rush Ive ever seen as a co-ordinator. (Defences were) just sitting there just scared to death, just watching and not moving. " Shanahan noted that Griffins three injuries last year -- a concussion against Atlanta , the right knee against Baltimore and again in the playoff loss to Seattle -- came on pass plays not on quarterback runs. "The threat of Robert running was the thing I enjoyed the most throughout the year," Shanahan said. "About halfway through the year, I realized were not getting any of these blitzes that I used to see. The threat of a quarterback running makes (defences) play 11 on 11 as opposed to 11 on 10 like theyve been doing my whole career." Shanahan maintained that hes not tied to any particular scheme. "Everybody in the league runs pretty close to the same plays and its just when you call those plays, how do you call those plays versus what coverages," he said. "I dont plan on having an exact system the rest of my career. The job of a co-ordinator isnt to reinvent the wheel. Its to try to figure out the best way to put these talented players in a situation that they can be successful." Griffin, the second overall pick in the 2012 draft, was so successful that he led Washington to its first NFC East title in 13 years and its first playoff spot in five while setting rookie quarterback records for passer rating and rushing yards. Shanahan believes that Griffin will be smarter about sliding and throwing passes away than he was as a rookie. Griffin has to "get used to sliding, knowing when to fight for yards, when not to fight for yards," Shanahan said. "I think its harder for guys their rookie years because the speed of the game is a lot different. People get up on you a little (quicker). You gotta slide early and anticipate things. In college, he would just outrun (defenders). Most quarterbacks have been throwing the ball away since high school. Roberts just starting to do it." As for Griffins ongoing absence, Shanahans said what is "frustrating is you know youre going to eventually play with him and youd like to work with him and practice with him, but you cant do that. Its part of the injury. You just gotta wait and be patient and get ready (for) when he comes back." Notes: Redskins placed defensive end Doug Worthington (biceps) and tight end DeAngelo Peterson (foot) on waived/injured list. ... Washington signed receiver Donte Stallworth. ... Adam Carriker hasnt been on the field since he tore his right quadricep last Sept. 16 and has had two surgeries, but defensive co-ordinator Jim Haslett said Carriker will be back at some point. "Hes one of the hardest working guys on the team. The one you dont want to say, this guy wont make it back, dont say that about Adam." ... Haslett said he can definitely envision one of the rookie safeties, fourth-round draft pick Phillip Thomas or sixth-rounder Baccari Rambo, starting. But he added that everything at the position depends on the health of veteran Brandon Meriweather, who missed all but one game in 2012 with a series of right knee injuries. Kevin Plawecki Jersey . Spencer Abbott also scored in the shootout for the Marlies (25-13-4). Middlesex 141 for 5 (Morgan 43) beat Somerset 137 (Allenby 64, Roland-Jones 3-24) by five wicketsScorecard Eoin Morgan top scored with 43 as Middlesex boosted their hopes of a NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final place with a five-wicket win over Somerset at Taunton. The hosts were bowled out in 19.3 overs for a paltry 136 after winning the toss as their desperately disappointing group campaign yielded an eighth defeat. Jim Allenby top-scored with 64, while Tony Roland-Jones claimed three for 24.There were two wickets each for James Fuller, Harry Podmore and Nathan Sowter. Middlesex coasted to victory with five balls to spare as Morgan, Dawid Malan (24), George Bailey (21) and John Simpson (23 not out) led the way to the modest target.Somersets embarrassment was complete when a no-ball for not having enough fielders in the circle helped tilt the game towards Middlesex in the closing stages.Somersets innings was as grey as the weather. They were given a reasonable start by Allenby and Mahela Jayawardene, who took the score to 49 at the end of the six-over powerplay. Then Jayawardene was caught behind making room to cut Podmore and from that point the innings meandered, providing precious little excitement for home supporters in the crowd.Peter Trego departed to his first big hit, caught at long-off to give leg-spinner Sowter his first wicket and, although Allenby moved to a half-century off 38 balls, with 7 fours and a six, Somerset badly lost momentum.Johann Myburgh did his best to inject some urgency and hit the only other six of the innings before being caught attempting another. Tim Rouses first team debut ended on nine when he was bowled by Fuller.Roelof van der Merwe failed to clear the short boundary on the town side of the ground and fell to Roland-Jones, who followed up by dismissing Allenby and Lewis Gregory with the fifth and sixth balls of the same over.It was an all too familiar story for Somerset fans as only three batsman managed double figures.Unnder no pressure to score quickly, Middlesex openers Nick Gubbins and Dawid Malan still took 16 off the third over, bowled by Gregory.ddddddddddddThey had added 29 in 3.4 overs when Gregory took a sharp catch at mid-wicket off van der Merwe to dismiss Gubbins for 13.Middlesex then got bogged down themselves. Malan made room only to carelessly slash a catch to deep cover off Josh Davey, Somersets most impressive bowler. After ten overs the score was only 54 for two as Morgan and Bailey began watchfully. Morgan hit the first six of the innings off Max Waller in the 12th over.Bailey fell with the score on 91, caught at deep mid-wicket off Davey, but by then Morgan was starting to cut loose and he collected another maximum off van der Merwe in the 16th over as Middlesex closed in on victory. The England batsman was visibly frustrated over being caught at long-off in the 18th over to give Waller a wicket. And when James Franklin hit a Gregory full-toss straight to mid-off with nine needed from eight balls Middlesex hearts beat a little faster. But a no-ball awarded against Gregory for too many fielders outside the ring followed by a Ryan Higgins boundary quickly eased any nerves and a Simpson six off the first ball of the final over settled the outcome.Allenby said: What happened with the last ball of the 19th over was that we knew we were running short of time and needed to get into position quickly.I probably wasnt quite clear enough in the field we needed to set and it was all a bit of a rush. The no-ball was called because we only had three men inside the circle.Defending nine off the last over would have been tough, with John Simpson in form he has been showing, but there would have been a chance. As it turned out, the free hit went for four and the first ball of the last over for six, so we will never know what might have been. ' ' '
