AMES, Iowa -- Iowa States future appears to be bright, thanks largely to first-year coach Matt Campbell and his staffs work as recruiters. The present remains as murky as ever. The Cyclones showed why theyre likely in for another long season in dropping their opener to Northern Iowa 25-20 on Saturday. Iowa State had plenty of chances to put away their FCS rivals, but late turnovers and penalties left the door open for the Panthers to steal a win in Ames. The Cyclones dont have much time to regroup after their disastrous opener either. Theyve got a trip Saturday to Iowa City to face No. 17 Iowa -- which had little trouble dispatching Miami (Ohio) last weekend -- followed by a matchup at No. 13 TCU the following week. For us, were trying to break bad habits and a culture of that, Campbell said. Theres a process to it.Iowa States biggest issue right now is its patchwork offensive line. The Cyclones couldnt run the ball against Northern Iowa, a troubling sign for a team facing back-to-back road games against ranked opponents.Mike Warren, who led the Big 12 in rushing yards in league games in 2015, had just 30 on 12 carries against the Panthers as his line struggled to create lanes for him to run through. Mobile quarterback Joel Lanning didnt find much space either, gaining just 29 yards while losing 19 on three sacks. The fear for Iowa State was that its line, which collectively had just one start for the Cyclones heading into 2016, would be its downfall. That was certainly the case it its opener, although the return of right tackle Julian Good-Jones from a one-game suspension is expected to help against the Hawkeyes.Julian coming back will help that offensive line a little bit, Campbell said. But we put ourselves in some tough positions for that offensive line to get exposed. If there was good news for Iowa State it was that, in context, its defense performed well in the opener. The Cyclones inability to sustain drives left their defense on the field for nearly 36 minutes, and their fatigue was evident in the fourth quarter as Northern Iowa drove 36 yards for the winning touchdown. All three of the Panthers touchdowns came off miscues by the Iowa State offense. But the Cyclones defense allowed just 4.3 yards per play, forced eight punts and stuffed Northern Iowa on 13 of its 17 third downs.I thought the one area that certainly was a success for us on Saturday night was our ability to get off the field on third down, Campbell said. That really showed up.Much of the excitement that Iowa State generated in the offseason came from Campbells first recruiting class, which ranked among the best the Cyclones had brought in for decades. Six true freshmen played last weekend, most notably running backs David Montgomery and Kene Nwangwu.Iowa States next class is ranked even higher, giving fans hope that Campbell, at 36 the youngest Power Five coach in the country, can finally turn its languishing program around. But fixing the Cyclones wont be quick or easy, a fact Campbell came face to face with last weekend. You have to stay the course. You cant let one game define your season, quarterback Joel Lanning said. Its time to move on.Pablo Sandoval Jersey . -- Mike Smith never saw his first NHL goal go in. In this case Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky elbowed Saku Koivu in the head about a second after he dished off the puck to a teammate, knocking him unconscious. Colten Brewer Jersey . To which I would say two things: 1. Where there is smoke, there is or perhaps has been a little fire. Or, in other words, the two teams would appear to have at least spoken. And spoken is defined as one calling the other to inquire, no more, no less.ST. LOUIS -- And the winner is ... Roberto Hernandez.Hernandez, known as Fausto Carmona when he won 19 games for the 2007 Cleveland Indians that reached the American League Championship Series, starts Saturday nights game for the Atlanta Braves at the St. Louis Cardinals. The 36-year old Hernandez was about the only logical choice Atlanta (39-70) had for this one after right-hander Aaron Blair, who it had planned to promote from Triple-A Gwinnett to make the start, injured his knee Thursday and landed on the disabled list.Their rotation already threadbare by other injuries and trades, the Braves turned to Hernandez, who is 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 16 International League starts between Buffalo and Gwinnett.Hernandez was picked up by Atlanta on July 15, so forgive interim manager Brian Snitker if his scouting report on him isnt exactly detailed.I dont know, Snitker said. I havent talked to anybody. Last time I seen him on TV, he started the season opener in 06 when I managed Triple A -- Buffalo against Richmond. The following year, Hernandez -- a.k.a. Carmona -- enjoyed by far the best year of his MLB career. He drew votes for the Cy Young Award and helped Cleveland get within a game of the World Series. But Hernandez couldnt follow that season with other good ones and has bounced from team-to-team over the last five years. He started this year in Torontos organization, but was released July 3.While the Braves are just trying to piece together a rotation to finish out their final 53 games,, St.dddddddddddd. Louis (58-51) is in a fight with the Miami Marlins and others for a wild-card spot.Friday nights 1-0 victory over Atlanta kept the Cardinals in lockstep with Miami for wild card number two. They were led by starter Jaime Garcia, who fanned 11 over eight scoreless innings and knocked in the only run with a second inning single.Garcias outing was just the teams seventh quality start since the All-Star break. Not only did it serve as a great bounceback from his 11-0 loss on July 30 in Miami, it gave an overworked bullpen a night off, save for closer Seung Hwan Oh.If we had had a little more room, we could have sat the bullpen down and given them a nights rest, manager Mike Matheny said of the decision to lift Garcia after eight innings. Jaime wanted the ball (in the ninth) and probably deserved the ball, but they were turning the lineup over for a fourth time. We need every win we can get.St. Louis Carlos Martinez (10-6, 2.99 ERA) will try to ape Garcias effort. Martinez is 2-0 in his career against the Braves, earning a 1-0 win against them last July and a 12-2 decision on April 9 in Atlanta, working six innings in that one.Martinez is coming off a no-decision Sunday in Miami, working seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks, whiffing four. Martinez shrugged off a three-run first to keep the Cardinals in the game. ' ' '
