BERKELEY, Calif. -- Growing up in Texas, Davis Webb knew all about the Big Game rivalry between California and Stanford. Now as he finishes up his only season as starting quarterback at Cal, Webb gets to experience it first hand when the Golden Bears (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) host the Cardinal (7-3, 5-3) on Saturday.I dont think theres anything like this game, he said. Theres so much tradition, so much pageantry and so many great players that have played in this game. Im just excited to be a part of it. From afar, living in Dallas, everybody knew what the Big Game was. Its going to be one of the greatest experiences Ive ever had in my life. While the Big Game is new to Webb, it has been part of Stanford coach David Shaws life for decades.Shaw remembers watching his first as a high school senior in 1989 when his father, Willie, was an assistant at Stanford and immediately noticed the heightened noise, energy and excitement in the stadium. That only increased the following year when Shaw was a player at Stanford and the Cardinal rallied for a 27-25 win after scoring a touchdown with 12 seconds left, missing a 2-point conversion, recovering an onside kick and capitalizing on two personal fouls to set up John Hopkins game-winning field goal.I say this every year, to the freshmen from all over the country and maybe the sophomores who didnt play last year, to not be surprised by the emotion as you walk through the stadium. Youre going to feel it, Shaw said. I feel it as a coach. Im an alum. Im a Stanford guy. And Big Game is always Big.Here are some other things to watch:BIG GAME STREAK: The rivalry has been extremely one-sided of late with Stanford winning the past six meetings -- one shy of the longest streak in series history held by the Cardinal from 1995-2001. Only one of those games was decided by fewer than 10 points and the average margin of victory has been 23.2 points per game.Thatd be a pretty cool legacy to leave, to be a part of a team that was able to beat Stanford, Webb said.BOWL BID: After opening the season 4-3, Cal has lost three straight games to put the Bears hopes of returning to a bowl game in serious jeopardy. The Bears must win their final two games against Stanford and UCLA to become bowl eligible, although they could have an outside shot of making a bowl with five wins if there are not enough six-win teams to fill up all the slots. We know whats at stake, Cal receiver Bug Rivera said. Everybody knows whats at stake. Wed really like to get that bowl opportunity and think were going to get it done.CHRYSTS PROGRESS: After going just 24 for 47 for 164 yards in his first two starts, Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst showed signs of improvement last week at Oregon. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns.Hes been making incremental improvements the first two games, Shaw said. Its the execution of the offense. All the positive signs were there in practice. No one wants it more and no one is pushing himself harder than Keller. All he has to do is play his part. He doesnt have to take the game over.STOPPING McCAFFREY: After being slowed by an undisclosed injury last month, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey has been back to his dynamic self the past three weeks. He has rushed for 503 yards at an average of 7.0 yards per carry and scored seven TDs in that span. He faces a Cal run defense that is second-worst in the FBS, allowing 283.4 yards rushing per game.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25Cheap Air Max 95 Uk .ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. DALLAS -- Fans chanted S-M-U when the Mustangs, three-touchdown underdogs against No. 11 Houston, took a lead that big in the first half. They were chanting again in the final moments of a 38-16 victory Saturday, one of the biggest for a program thats been mostly moribund in three decades since getting shut down by crippling sanctions under the NCAAs so-called death penalty. It means everything, said redshirt freshman quarterback Ben Hicks, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score. We just needed one. Weve been saying it all along. Now we got that one, and now we have to flip the script and get ready for Tulane. But let coach Chad Morris and his gang enjoy this one for maybe a day at least. Morris, a Dallas native, took the job after the program collapsed following several promising seasons under June Jones. The laid-back former NFL coach took the Mustangs to their first bowl game since the programs shutdown -- and they went to four in a row.But a losing season in 2013 was followed by an embarrassing start in 2014, and Jones abruptly quit two games into the season. With a season-ending win at Connecticut in 2014, SMU avoided a second winless season since 2003. It was the seventh one-win campaign, though, since 1990.Morris debut last season was as rough as Jones in 2008, but the Mustangs showed promise early this year by staying with high-scoring Texas teams Baylor and TCU before fading in the second half of both games. There was no fade against the Cougarrs in SMUs fourth win in 20 tries against Houston since returning from the death penalty.dddddddddddd The first game was a 95-21 loss. The last time the Mustangs (3-4, 1-2 American) beat a team ranked 11th or higher, they were No. 4 and finishing off a near-perfect 1982 season (11-0-1) with a 7-3 victory over sixth-ranked Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl. SMU tied No. 7 Texas A&M in 1994.After the game, to see our student body and our former players and some of the alumni out there, I dont know how long I stayed out there taking pictures with them, Morris said. But the `Thank yous. `Coach, we thank you. Weve been waiting on something like this, to give us life back in this program. They were so close a few years ago and it went down from there. The Mustangs lost senior quarterback Matt Davis to a season-ending knee injury, and Hicks threw nine interceptions in his first four starts. Now he has 486 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions the past two games. The first game was a 43-40 overtime loss to Tulsa two weeks ago. When we came off the field against Tulsa that was as hurt of a locker room as Ive ever been part of, Morris said. For two weeks weve had to respond. And I shared with them that if we could all respond the right way, great things were coming.Great things came quickly.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
