SEATTLE -- Brett Oberholtzer was handed a four-run lead before he even took the mound Friday night for the Los Angeles Angels. It disappeared pretty quickly.Oberholtzer was pulled without getting an out in the second inning, part of a nine-run outburst that sent the Seattle Mariners to an 11-8 victory.Obviously, its not the start we were looking for or he was looking for, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.Los Angeles mounted a ninth-inning rally but fell short.Mike Trout hit a three-run homer his first time up and Jefry Marte added a solo shot in the first for the Angels, giving Oberholtzer (1-1) a 4-0 advantage. But he walked the first batter he faced and gave up Guillermo Heredias RBI double in the first, then allowed two singles and walked two batters in the second, ending his night.I walked the leadoff hitter and it just snowballed from there, Oberholtzer said. I thought I was making pretty quality pitches, but just going the wrong way.Jhoulys Chacin came on with the bases loaded and promptly walked in a run. The first out of the inning came when Heredia grounded into a fielders choice with the bases loaded, driving in a run. Seattle got a second run on the play on second baseman Gregorio Petits throwing error, giving the Mariners a 5-4 lead. The scoring didnt end there. Five runs in the inning came with two outs, and the bottom of Seattles order did the most damage -- the last four hitters in the lineup all reached base twice. The Mariners sent 14 batters to the plate, getting six hits (all singles) and five walks.Even after building a seven-run lead, the Mariners had a hard time putting this one away. Los Angeles scored four times in the ninth, aided by third baseman Kyle Seagers error, before Edwin Diaz retired Trout with two on for his 12th save.Juan Graterol hit a run-scoring double in his first major league at-bat, and Kole Calhoun had a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 11-8.Diaz entered and got Trout on a fly to deep center. It was just off the end a little bit, Trout said. Thats baseball. They came back and battled. We came back and battled tonight. To take a positive tonight, we fought to the end and had a chance in the ninth. Thats all you want.Nelson Cruz hit his 33rd homer in the eighth for the Mariners, who remained four games behind Baltimore and Detroit for the final AL playoff spot.Ariel Miranda (2-1) had a rough start for Seattle, falling behind 3-0 after three batters. A walk and a single led to Trouts 26th home run before Marte connected with two outs. Miranda, however, recovered to pitch six innings without allowing another run.FIRST TIME OUTGraterols double drew a big reaction on the bench. The catcher was called up earlier in the year but did not appear in a game before being sent back down. This was his first major league game after 11 years in the minors. Hes worked so hard to get here, Scioscia said. The guys in the dugout felt great for him.ROSTER MOVESBoth teams took advantage of Septembers expanded rosters and added players. The Angels recalled Graterol and LHP Cody Ege, and selected the contract of RHP Andrew Bailey from Triple-A Salt Lake. They also activated 3B Yunel Escobar from the 7-day concussion disabled list.Seattle added OF Ben Gamel, acquired from the Yankees in a trade Wednesday, to the major league roster and recalled C Jesus Sucre from Triple-A Tacoma. Gamel started in right field and batted leadoff.TROUTS CRASHTrout said he was fine before the game and had no lingering pain, two days after he was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on a Los Angeles freeway. He declined to go into specifics about the accident but said he was lucky it wasnt more serious.UP NEXTAngels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (2-3, 4.75 ERA) makes his eighth start of the season Saturday -- and third against the Mariners. Skaggs is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA vs. Seattle.Mariners: RHP Taijuan Walker (4-9, 4.19) has lost his last three decisions.Ian Miller Twins Jersey . -- Canadian Andrew Wiggins got the ball on the wing, made a nifty spin move and then let go with a soft floater from about 10 feet that swished through the net in Allen Fieldhouse. I think were just about there. The best is certainly yet to come, because a lot of these guys will be key players in the next World Cup cycle as well. Many of those faces are the fruits of a global talent sweep early in Postecoglous incumbency. No future star was missed, including those with dual nationality who could choose which country to play for.In the squad to face Thailand are five who played youth international football for other countries in Brad Smith (England), Apo Giannou (Greece), Milos Degenek (Serbia), Jamie Maclaren (Scotland) and Jackson Irvine (Scotland), while Jimmy Jeggo is also still eligible to play for Austria. Its not about convincing them, Postecoglou said.I think all of them wanted to but sometimes, particularly for guys who leave Australia at a young age and go halfway around the world, if we dont show them a little bit of care and attention they could get lost.
