TULSA, Okla. - Ole Miss soccer got back in the win column in a big way Sunday night, closing out its non-conference slate with a 2-1 road win over Tulsa at Hurricane Stadium. The Rebels (5-5) fought back from a halftime deficit overcoming a 1-0 Tulsa lead to score two unanswered early on in the second period. It marked the first time this season Ole Miss would come back from being down at half.Tulsa (4-5-1), a program that won 13 games a year ago, took an early lead at the 9:53 mark in the first half (Reagan Whitlow goal) that would last for the remainder of the opening period. The Rebels finished the half with six shots for four on goal, while Tulsa had just the one shot on target at intermission. While Ole Miss didnt score in the opening 45 minutes, it sure put the pressure on including two shots off the foot of CeCe Kizer. The sophomore powered one from 15 yards out but high in the 31st minute, and went on to breakaway from a Tulsa defender and put herself in a 1-v-1 situation three minutes later with another shot on goal.Mackenze Parma, who entered as a sub late in the half, posted one of the better shots of the night as her attempt drifted just wide left in the 36th.After the break, the Rebels didnt waste much time cranking up the offense in the 50th minute for their first score of the night. At the 50:08 mark, Gabby Little crossed into the box to Addie Forbus, who then headed it to Gretchen Harknett. From there, Harknett punched in the equalizer from 12 yards out, her third score of the season and 13th of her career, tying the contest at 1-1.Exactly 10 minutes later, Forbus got possession, dribbled down field, beat two defenders and fired off a beautiful shot from 15 yards out that carried into the far left corner. The go-ahead goal was her third game-winner of the season, her eighth goal overall and 30th of her career, which now slots her in a three-way tie for sixth all-time in career goals.Tulsa went on to post a shot on goal in the 69th, but a nice save by Ole Miss keeper Marnie Merritt kept it away. The Golden Hurricane had one last chance late in the match, but the Rebel defense held strong on a corner kick with 20 seconds to go.Ole Miss finished the contest posting 10 of its 15 shots on target, while the backline and Merritt held Tulsa to just four shots on goal and nine overall. Merritt went on to fend off three shots as shes now in sole possession of eighth-place on the all-time saves list.Kizer was active offensively with six shots total, three of which were on target, while Forbus finished strong with four shots, all of which were on goal. Bella Fiorenzo posted three shots entering as a sub, while Harknetts only one went in, and Parmas one shot was saved. The Rebels return home to the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium Thursday night for the Magnolia Cup against Mississippi State. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will air nationally on SEC Network. Mitch Moreland Red Sox Jersey . Some might even call it overly ambitious. The junior college transfer wants to have 1,000 yards rushing through seven games. Thats fairly high-reaching, especially for someone who isnt the starter, has never played a down in the Southeastern Conference and has plenty of competition for carries. But the 6-foot-2, 242-pound bruising back from Pennsylvania expects to become the teams workhorse before the Sept. 3 season opener against UMass and doesnt plan on relinquishing the role. Its realistic, definitely, for sure, Thompson said. If Im doing the right things, coming to practice, working, coming to the games working harder, then, yeah, its realistic.Jordan Cronkrite and Jordan Scarlett might have something to say about that.Cronkrite and Scarlett backed up Kelvin Taylor as freshmen last season, although neither did much off the bench. Cronkrite ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns; Scarlett had 181 on the ground and a score. Scarlett got most of his yardage in a lopsided victory against rival Georgia. Were in the SEC. Not just one running back can take all that load, so whenever one of us gets tired or injured, we have the next man up who can do the same thing or even better, Scarlett said. I think the downside is theres only one ball, so yeah, four people cant get to one ball. Hey, its the best man wins.Thompson has been counting on being Floridas guy since coach Jim McElwain started recruiting him at Dodge City (Kansas) Community College last year. Thompson ran for 1,298 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore, catching McElwains eye as much because of his stature as his stats.McElwain said all the right things -- including some deep things about being a man, Thompson said -- and he chose the Gators over Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State, Louisville and Alabama.Floriida was the right fit for me because I know Coach McElwain likes bigger running backs, Thompson said.dddddddddddd At the same time, I know Florida had Kelvin Taylor as the main ball carrier. I found out there was a chance he would go to the NFL and I wanted to fill his shoes or fill his spot at least.Taylor ran 259 times for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2015. It took him 14 games to top 1,000 yards. Thompson wants to do it in half the time, all before the teams bye week.If Im doing the right things, I wouldnt be surprised if I did, he said. For Thompson to stay on the field, he will need better ball security than what he showed in the spring. He fumbled way too often in practice and even put the ball on the ground in the Orange and Blue game.He immediately started doing extra drills to work on keeping it high and tight to my chin, including carrying a ball to and from campus every day.Everywhere, he said. Even when Im at home playing Xbox. One hand on the controller and one hand on the ball.Thompson hasnt fumbled in practice this fall and hopes to keep his streak intact before and during the season. Doing that surely will improve his chances of getting 1,000 yards in seven games.Being on the defensive side of the ball, you dont want to tackle that guy every play, cornerback Jalen Tabor said. Like Marshawn Lynch, when you keep hitting someone over and over and over, you get tired of it. Hes 6-2, 240, can move, and when he hits you, its different. I mean, hes got 40 pounds on me and hes coming full speed. Hes bigger than our `backers. If he just runs the ball the way hes capable of running it, the skys the limit. Its going to take two, three people to tackle him.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
