Nearly four months after they played a pulsating final at the Olympic games in Rio, Carolina Marin and PV Sindhu will resume their rivalry at the Superseries Finals in Dubai starting on Wednesday. The pair have been drawn in the same group for the season ending tournament, featuring the top eight ranked players in the Superseries rankings, and their encounter will climax the group stage of the competition on Friday. The Superseries finals is played in the same format as the ATP & WTA tours year ending events with the players drawn in two groups of four each. At the end of the round robin stage, where they play each other once, the top two players qualify for the semifinals.Although Marin leads Sindhu 5-2 in their head-to-head encounters, she has struggled to maintain her form since the Olympics. A thigh injury sustained at the Denmark Open in October, her first tournament since Rio, has impeded her progress. Marin hasnt reached the final of any of the three tournaments she has competed in since clinching the Olympic Gold. She has in fact lost her top spot in the rankings to Taiwans Tai Tzu Ying, who beat her in a three game semifinal at the Hong Kong Open recently.Sindhu, on the other hand, has been in eye catching form recently. After exiting early from her first two tournaments after the Olympics in Denmark and France, Sindhu produced a sparkling run in China, where she won her first Superseries title and then reached the final in Hongo Kong, where she was beaten by Ying.Having missed a few Superseries events at the start of the year with injury, Sindhu wasnt expecting to even make the cut for Dubai, but these two sizzling performances helped her accumulate enough points to sneak in late. Speaking recently to ESPN, her coach Pullela Gopichand had said he was pleased to see Sindhus evolution as a player, especially the additions she has made to her arsenal of strokes.?While the clash against Marin will be eagerly anticipated, Sindhu will be keen to make a strong start at her first appearance at this elite event. On Wednesday, she plays Japans Akane Yamaguchi to get her campaign going. Sindhu leads the head to head against Yamaguchi 2-1 and has won both their previous clashes, including one earlier in the year at the Uber Cup.However Yamaguchis notched up some impressive recent results. She won the Korean Open in October and backed that up with another title in Denmark the following week. Though Yamaguchi has lost early at her last three tournaments, the world number 8 will be a tricky first opponent for Sindhu. On Thursday, Sindhu will come up against the rapidly improving Sun Yu of China, who has risen to 6 in the world rankings. The pair have clashed six times and have shared those matches equally. Sindhu won their most recent encounter, when she beat Yu on her home turf in the final of the China Open. It was a bruising three game encounter that lasted nearly 70 minutes before Sindhu clinched it 21-11 in the third game. With seven different players having shared the 12 Superseries events on the womens circuit in 2016, no clear favourite has emerged for the year ending finals. On current form Sindhu will surely be among the leading contenders though Gopichand was cautious in his assessment recently, saying many of her matches in China and Hong Kong had been closely fought where either player could have emerged on the right side of the result. Sindhu had told ESPN that she was elated at finding a place among this select field and the platform will provide her another opportunity to continue her to target a spot in the top five next year and more importantly continue to develop her game.Competition has always been there be it a small stage or big, she said. Meeting the challenges and winning them are the crowning glories that the titles carry. The Wimbledon Diary has seen messages that Lendl exchanged with President George Bush Senior, with the correspondence confirming that the former Wimbledon runner-up has long been a Republican voter. Some of the messages were in 1992, at a time when Lendls playing career was coming to an end and when Bush was running for re-election to the White House, a contest that he would lose to Bill Clinton. Archived in the George Bush Presidential Library is a handwritten note that Lendl sent, which reads: Dear Mr President, Samantha [Lendls wife] and I wanted to take a moment to wish you the best of luck during this years presidential campaign. Its my first chance to vote and of course Im voting for you and the Republican Party.Bush replied: The polls stink, but I remain confident of victory. Give Samantha a hug. I still follow your tennis actions closely.Tattoo parlour philosophyLooking for some philosophical insights? Need some life guidance? Then why not come to Wimbledon and read the players tattoos? Tennis fans coming out of Southfields station, which is the closest London Underground stop to the All England Club, were greeted by a group of touts shouting and swearing at each other in a dispute over who could work the prime piece of pavement opposite the exit. And the Wimbledon Diary has learned that the billionaire introduces the Briton to others in the clubhouse as the great John Lloyd, a winner of three Grand Slam titles. What The Donald doesnt say is that those were mixed doubles titles.
