Phil Taylor secured a return to Premier League Finals Night with victory over Robert Thornton in Bournemouth on Thursday night. The Power sits top of the standings and his 7-2 victory over Thornton was enough to seal a top four finish and a place at the O2 in May having failed to qualify for the semi-finals in 2015. PL Darts Night 12 Relive the action in our live blog The six-time Premier League champion was not at his best and averaged in the 80s for much of his match with Thornton but Taylor had too much for the Scot and was always able to keep his nose in front having broken early on for a 3-0 lead. The 16-time world champion has not won the Premier League since 2012 but is the first man to secure his place this year and now has set his sights on the £25,000 bonus for finishing top of the league phase for the first time in three years. Taylor was too strong for Thornton in Bournemouth World No 1 Michael van Gerwen is hot on the heels of Taylor. After a run of four draws from his previous five matches, the Dutchman secured two victories to all but join Taylor at the O2.MVG kicked off the evening with a comprehensive victory against Peter Wright - Snakebite was unable to live with the Dutchmans power and another average in excess of 100 was enough to wrap up a 7-2 victory.Van Gerwen followed that up in the final match of the night with a win against Adrian Lewis - neither man was at their best as they felt the effects of a second game of the evening but the Green Machine came out on top following a topsy-turvy tussle.Jackpot, reeling from a 7-4 defeat to Raymond van Barneveld earlier in the night, missed four darts at a double to claim the opening leg but he was punished by Van Gerwen who roared into 4-1 lead. Premier League Night 12 - Results Michael van Gerwen 7-2 Peter Wright Raymond van Barneveld 7-4 Adrian Lewis Gary Anderson 6-6 James Wade Phil Taylor 7-2 Robert Thornton Adrian Lewis 5-7 Michael van Gerwen Lewis managed to find form midway through the match with a couple of big finishes to level at 4-4. MVG surged once again but when he missed four darts for the match it looked like Lewis could pinch a precious point. It was not to be for Jackpot as Van Gerwen, averaging in the mid 90s, wrapped up a 7-5 win that puts him two points behind Taylor and only an unlikely sequence of results can stop him returning to Finals Night. MIchael Van Gerwen won twice in Bournemouth to close on a semi-final place (Picture by Lawrence Lustig) Lewis first match of the night ended in a defeat to Barney, a win for the Dutchman somehow keeping his faint hopes of a play-off place alive.Barney won seven of his last eight games last year to make the O2 but he will require even more of a miracle run this year despite an impressive showing against Jackpot who was well below his best.In the nights other match, Gary Anderson picked up what could be a crucial point ahead of his double week in Birmingham next Thursday. The defending champion came up against a typically stubborn James Wade and a 6-6 draw keeps alive both mens hopes of joining Taylor in London on May 19. Ive been trusting my game this year. I look to keep it going.Bird always has paired a rare combination of athleticism and 3-point shooting ability, but injuries and inconsistency have prevented him from reaching his full blossom. Cal coach Cuonzo Martin sees a change in Bird. Its his senior year, hes more settled, hes relaxed, Martin said. He understands what he wants to do as a basketball player and knows what we need from him.Bird shot 10 for 16 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point distance, and eclipsed his previous best of 24 points. It was his second 20-point performance in four outings since returning from a six-game absence because of back spasms.Obviously, hes an explosive scorer, an explosive athlete, said Ivan Rabb, the Bears pre-season All-America forward, who scored 18 points before fouling out. We need him out there. He plays the game the right way. Hes not selfish. Weve got to continue to play together as a team. We did that tonight.Charlie Moore had 10 points and five assists for Cal (9-2), which shot 53 percent.Kyle Toth made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points to lead Cal Poly (5-6). Victor Joseph and Ridge Shipley added 12 points apiece for the Mustangs, who shot just 32 percent. The Bears were sluggish offensively for stretches early and trailed 19-13 with 8:30 in the first half before outscoring the Mustangs 21-3 the rest of the period. Rabb scored on a post-up move to give Cal the lead for good at 23-22, and by halftime the Bears were up 34-22.They have NBA first-round draft picks that will be playing in the three-letter league, and I love it, said Cal Poly coach Joe Callero.dddddddddddd I think its a great game for our players and coaches to help us continue to tweak things that we have to improve.BIG PICTURECal: The Bears nudged past a team from their glory days by winning their 27th consecutive home game at Haas Pavilion. That eclipsed the school record of 26 straight home wins, achieved by legendary former coach Pete Newells team from Dec. 27, 1958 through Dec. 16, 1960. Those Bears won the 1959 NCAA championship and lost in the 1960 national title game.Theres a lot of tradition and history at Cal. A lot of great players have come through, Martin said. We wont talk about numbers. We just fight for our home court. This Cal team has not lost at home since an 80-69 defeat to Oregon on Feb. 25, 2015.Cal Poly: The Mustangs were outrebounded for the eighth time in 10 games against Division I opponents. Cal Poly entered the game ranked 320th nationally with a minus-5.2 rebound margin, but the Mustangs actually battled well on the boards before Cal finished with a scant 39-38 advantage. It was an encouraging sign for Cal Poly, which needs to keep it up in order to compete near the top of the Big West Conference.AN EARLY ENDORSEMENTCallero saw the Bears play early in the season when both Bird and Rabb were either out or struggling with injuries. Cal is back to full strength now, he said. They really look like a team that could compete with the top four in the Pac-12. They are building an NCAA (tournament) resume.UP NEXTCalifornia gets a chance to test themselves against one of the nations elite teams when they host No. 13 Virginia on Wednesday.
