GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and quarterback Carson Palmer have signed one-year contract extensions with the Arizona Cardinals. The deals put Fitzgerald under contract through the 2017 season and Palmer through 2018.Fitzgerald, holder of virtually all the franchise receiving records with statistics among the NFLs all-time greats, turns 33 on Aug. 31.Palmer is 36 and entering his 14th NFL season, fourth with the Cardinals. He set franchise records and personal bests for yards passing, touchdown passes and quarterback rating in leading Arizona to a 13-3 record last season.Fitzgerald is entering his 13th NFL season, all with Arizona. His 109 catches last season broke the franchise mark he set a decade earlier.Clearly these are two core members of our team who have played major roles in our success, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said in a news release announcing the signings. Each of them had contracts that were due to expire in the next year or two so these extensions provide a measure of certainty and clarity for the players and organization, both now and in the years ahead. It also reaffirms our long-stated intention that when the time comes, these two great players end their stellar careers as Cardinals. The team practiced after the announcement was made Friday but neither player was to be made available to reporters, apparently at their request. Fitzgerald spoke to reporters in the locker room earlier but made no mention of the contract.Fitzgerald, who has spent all 12 of his seasons with the Cardinals, had evaded questions about whether he would play beyond this year, saying, I dont even know what Im having for dinner.Fitzgerald, the No. 3 overall draft choice of the Cardinals in 2004, was on the second year of a two-year, $22.5 million deal.Palmer has thrived in coach Bruce Arians wide-open system. After Arians was hired prior to the 2013 season, Palmer was acquired in a trade with Oakland. His 2014 season was cut short by a torn ACL but he came back to have arguably his best season in 2015. Palmer completed 64 percent of his passes last season for 4,671 yards and 35 touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 104.6.Palmer had two years left on the three-year, $49.5 million extension he signed in 2014. A Heisman Trophy winner at USC, Palmer was the No. 1 overall pick by Cincinnati in the 2003 draft. The deals came one day after Arizona signed defensive back Tyrann Mathieu to a five-year, $62.5 million extension, with $21.5 million guaranteed at signing.Three other major players on the roster have contracts that expire at the end of the coming season -- outside linebacker Chandler Jones, defensive lineman Calais Campbell and wide receiver Michael Floyd. Starting inside linebacker Kevin Minters contract also expires at the end of this season.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLAir Max Plus Tn Sale . -- Most satisfying to Russ Smith about No. Vapormax Plus Wholesale . Despite the loss, it was a remarkable show by the confident Swedish challenger, who had the best of the early rounds and then hung on in the fourth and fifth. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs looked as if they were two entirely different teams in their season opener. The first three quarters, they looked like a team that might not win another game, blowing assignments and getting dominated at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The final quarter, they looked as if they might not lose.Ultimately, the Chiefs 33-27 overtime win over the San Diego Chargers was a microcosm of last season, when they started off 1-5 before rattling off 11 straight wins into the playoffs.I think every guy knows how bad we played, how poorly we played in the first half, and were not going to get away with it all the time, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said. Some things in the second half went our way and we were able to get out of there with a `W, but as great as it is to win theres going to be a lot to learn from, a lot to improve upon. You cant start out that bad, he said, play that bad in the first half all the way around.Oh, but that second half. The biggest comeback in Chiefs history began when Smith hit rookie Tyreek Hill with a touchdown pass to take a bite out of a 24-3 deficit. But it really hit its stride when the Chargers missed a 54-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, giving Kansas City some desperately needed momentum.Smith proceeded to lead his team to three straight scores, including a nifty 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin and Spencer Wares tying touchdown run with just over a minute to go.In overtime, the Chiefs went 75 yards before Smith -- checking out of the original play -- kept the ball over the right side of the line and slipped through a crease into the end zone.Everybody on offense I think has a good feel for what were capable of when were playing well, said Smith, who has battled the perception for years that he is merely a game manager.Certainly we werent doing it and we werent playing the way were capable of for whatever reason, he said. Luckily, we found it there in the second half and overtime. The danger in such a comeback victory is forgetting about what got the Chiefs into a 24-3 hole -- glossing over the myrriad problems that put their season opener in peril.ddddddddddddThe Chiefs hardly touched Philip Rivers and didnt sack him until late in the fourth quarter. The young defensive backfield was consequently shredded by a speedy wide receiver group, and Marcus Peters was beaten soundly by Keenan Allen before the wide receiver left with a knee injury. The interior of the defensive line, once thought to be a strength, was repeatedly pushed back by the Chargers offensive front. And the fill-ins for injured middle linebacker Josh Mauga looked lost in a Chiefs defense that returns most of its key players from last season. We came out flat in the first half and were not like that typically, Peters said. We needed to establish the line of scrimmage, make tackles and play our own game.Things were just as disjointed on the other side of the ball. The Chiefs retooled offensive line allowed Smith to be sacked three times, and a group of wide receivers expected to be much improved was unable to get open against a suspect San Diego secondary. We knew we would have some learning to do with it being our first full game together. As a team, we came out a little rusty and we cant do that, tight end Travis Kelce said. With it being the season opener, we may have gotten a little caught up in the emotions. Other than that, weve been a good group for three and four years now and its starting to show.Just in time, too.The Chiefs may have plenty to learn from their ugly start Sunday, but they at least can go to school with a 1-0 record. And ultimately, their ability to rally in the fourth quarter showed just how potent they can be once things start clicking. Its one of 16, coach Andy Reid said. That first game can be overrated a little bit -- theres a lot of hype that goes into the first game of the season and there are 15 of them left. But I will tell you that (winning) doesnt hurt you. For sure, its a good thing.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
