JACKSON, Miss. -- Cody Gribble and his caddie talked a ton during the final nine holes of his impressive run to a Sanderson Farms Championship victory. Very little was about golf. They talked about Gribbles Texas Longhorns and their big win in football over Baylor on Saturday. They talked about the Chicago Cubs and the World Series. They discussed their upcoming trip to Las Vegas.Anything to keep Gribbles mind off the incredible run he was making.I knew I was in a good spot and I knew I was playing well, Gribble said. Its hard not to sit there and look at the scoreboard, look where youre at and how youre doing. The small talk worked. Gribble finished with a 7-under 65 -- which included five birdies on a spectacular back nine -- to turn a tight fight into a four-stroke victory and his first PGA Tour title. The 26-year-old rookie started the day a stroke behind playing partners Chris Kirk and Luke List.Gribble had two birdies on the front nine to stay in contention, and then he ran off birdies on Nos. 11, 13, 15, 16 and 17. He finished at 20-under 268.Gribble looked as if he might have trouble just making the cut at the Country Club of Jackson after an opening 73. He bounced back with a 63 in the second round -- one shy of the course record --?to jump into contention and followed it up with a 67 on Saturday. On Sunday, Gribble started slowly but picked up steam on an unseasonably hot day in Jackson, where the temperature pushed 90 degrees. He made a short birdie putt on 11 and then hit a difficult downhill 18-foot putt for birdie on 13.Then he was rolling, making three more birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to pull away.Kirk and List each shot 70 to tie for second with Englands Greg Owen (68).Cody played unbelievable, List said. He definitely deserved to win. I was happy to scramble around and get a couple under out of it.Kirk won the tournament in 2011, back when it was called the Viking Classic and was played at nearby Annandale Golf Club. He was in contention again at the Country Club of Jackson after shooting a 65 in the third round, but nobody was able to keep up with Gribbles torrid pace on Sunday. It was definitely impressive watching Cody play that back nine, Kirk said. I wish that I could have given him a little better run. I was just a little bit off, I guess.Gribble played in college at Texas and is the second member of the schools 2012 national championship team to win a PGA Tour event. The other is Jordan Spieth.Gribble obviously has a ways to go to match the accomplishments of Spieth, who is among the worlds best players, but the Sanderson Farms win is certainly a good start. He earned $756,000 and 300 FedEx Cup points, plus exempt status on the tour through the 2018-19 season. The four-stroke win was the second-largest in tournament history, trailing Frank Conners five-stroke win in 1988. LOUIS -- Valtteri Filppula assisted on three of Tampa Bays four goals, and the Lightning beat the St. SAN DIEGO -- After three straight appearances out of the bullpen, right-hander Clay Buchholz returns to the Boston rotation Tuesday night to face the Padres at Petco Park.Because of how hes been used, Clay might be fresher at this point of the season more than at any other time in his career, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Monday. We excited. Were inserting a guy back into the rotation who is fresh. Not that Buchholz was struggling before going to the bullpen after his Aug. 23 start at Tampa Bay, where he allowed one run on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.Tampa Bay was an encouraging start, said Farrell. His velocity was 94-95.Buchholz is 5-10 on the season with a 5.20 earned run average in 32 games (16 starts). But in his last five outings (two starts, three relief appearances), the right-hander has allowed four runs on 14 hits with four walks and 13 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings for a 2.35 ERA.And he has allowed two runs over 12 1/3 innings in his last two starts.Of course, there is a new twist to Buchholz. Hes working full time out of the stretch now.The reduction of body parts moving allows him to repeat his delivery more consistently, said Farrell. It has allowed his release point to be the same. Hes executing a high number of pitches. The rebounding Buchholz might not be the biggest question facing the Red Sox Tuesday night as they oppose Padres right-handed starter Paul Clemens, who is 1-4 with a 4.79 ERA since joining the Padres on June 28 as a waiver claim froom the Florida Marlins.dddddddddddd.The Red Sox have scored one run over two straight losses after scoring 35 runs in three wins before that. When Chris Young homered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of a 2-1 loss to the Padres Monday afternoon at Petco Park, it snapped a run of 16 straight scoreless innings by the Red Sox -- their longest scoreless innings streak of the season.Clemens might be the perfect medicine for the Red Sox short slump. On the season, Clemens has a 4.93 ERA and has allowed 10 homers in a total of 45 2/3 innings.Opposing batters have hit .277 against Clemens since he joined the Padres. He has given up five homers in 35 2/3 innings and has allowed fewer than three earned runs in only three of his first seven starts with the Padres while pitching into the sixth inning only once. His average start as a Padre has lasted 4 1/3 innings.Last Wednesday, Clemens lasted only three innings in Atlanta, although he allowed only one earned run (two total) on four hits and two walks. He needed 82 pitches to negotiate the three innings. He has to be more efficient, said Padres manager Andy Green. Its very difficult to be successful to be a starter when you are continually working behind in the count and throwing upwards of 20 pitches an inning. That taxes not only the starter, but usually the bullpen. The Padres like Clemens stuff, particularly the breaking ball. ' ' '
